Arapaho Trail, Tan, ZD500-51114

Pendleton

The Arapaho Trail pattern was initially developed from the traditional banded Chief Stripe blanket pattern which features three rows of three central designs. It originated with the Navajos and gained popularity among other tribes, including the Arapaho. The Arapaho tribe were notorious for being traders – their name, Arapaho- meaning "traders" was once thought to be given to them from the Pawnee tribe. The Arapaho were often known for exchanging furs and blankets, for other goods. Carrying their wares from Minnesota to Colorado, they often used a travois, which was their version of a trailer. They would pull the travois behind a team of dogs or a horse. The route they took from the prairie became known as the Arapaho Travois Trail.
